A little History of
the M.R.S.: This society
was started in the late 70's by a few people in the Spokane, Washington
area that wanted to help people to become aware of what Metaphysical
concepts were and to bring them out of the closet. Dell who owned
the Metaphysical Book Store had people coming into the store and they
decided to form a club. The Metaphysical Research Society was born out
of that concept. You have to remember in the 70's the only place to do
research was in the library and there were a few articles written in
magazines. They had different members speak on what they knew about a
subject, like Astrology, Numerology, Runes, Tarot, I Ching, automatic
writing etc. They printed a small pamphlet on many subjects for their
members on a mimeograph machine because there were no copy machines,
computers and what we have now for the average citizen to use. This
society developed into a club with many member wanting to know about
subjects that weren't "out there" in the main media which was your
newspapers, TV, and radio. The M.R.S. was the first in this area to
bring to Spokane what is now called the Expos like the Body, Mind,
Spirit. Every two years the club would have a Metaphysical Fair with
speakers, dinner and entertainment. It took all year to get it together
with monthly meetings. There was no e-mails and pictures going across
the wires. It took a lot of writing letters and mailing back and forth
and a few phone calls. Most of the speakers were authors of books. Some
of those speakers are now famous and on the Expo's circuit with speaking
engagements.
METAPHYSICAL RESEARCH SOCIETY
was started in the 1970's in Spokane Washington by a group of people
that wanted to explore the Metaphysical side of events. The original
members formed a group and made it a non-profit organization.
PHILOSOPHY
The Metaphysical Research Society (M.R.S.) believes
there are many pathways to enlightenment. All of these pathways are
founded in the love which supports and energizes the Creation as a whole.
The M.R.S. believes that no one pathway is the "correct" pathway. A
pathway is a matter of personal choice. The M.R.S. believes in the
sanctity and fundamental value of the individual. The M.R.S. also believes
that self-understanding, self-responsibility and creative development are
fundamental values and aspects of enlightenment.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the M.R.S. is to provide its membership,
and public in general, opportunities to assist in their enlightenment. The
M.R.S. also claims as a subsidiary, but fundamentally connective purpose,
to provide a source of "family" from within which its members can explore
the many pathways to enlightenment. The emphasis on family is to be as
much as possible a source of encouragement, support, challenge and
celebration for its members for the sake of self-understanding,
self-responsibility and creative development--the ultimate goals of
enlightenment.
GOALS
1. As its name implies, the
first goal of the M.R.S. is to provide opportunities for its members, and
the public in general, to explore metaphysical issues and interests. In
order to provide these opportunities, the M.R.S. establishes the following
objectives to which it commits its continued existence:
a) To
conduct monthly business meetings eleven (11) times per year, on the first
Thursday of the month, to provide its members the opportunity to address
issues which pertain to the continued existence and health of the
organization.
b) To present monthly programs up to eleven (11) times per year. These
programs will be of a metaphysical nature. Metaphysical being defined as
"opportunities to explore pathways to enlightenment." The programs will
run an hour in length and will immediately follow the monthly business
meeting.
c) To
present two psychic fairs yearly which allow its members and the general
public, the opportunity for direct contact with psychic practitioners at a
nominal charge. The charge will be determined by the Board of Directors
and voted on by the membership. The dates of the fairs are to be
determined by the Board and are to be held approximately every six months
in the spring and fall.
2. The second
goal of the M.R.S. is to provide a source of "family' to its members.
"Family" being defined as a source of connectedness, encouragement,
support, challenge and celebration. As a means of providing this source
the M.R.S. commits to the following objectives:
a) To provide a regular means for interaction by holding monthly meetings and
programs.
b) To provide opportunities for networking by holding "Networking Night"
every three months. On Networking Night members will be allowed two
minutes each after the business meeting to talk about themselves and the
things they do. Participation is voluntary.
c) To support the experience of family by holding a picnic in the summer and
a Christmas/Winter Solstice celebration in place of the December meeting.
3. The third goal of the M.R.S. is an extension of its perception of itself
as a family. Not only is family a form of community, it also exists within
a larger community. The M.R.S. recognizes that in order for it to survive
and flourish it must also support and give back to the larger community,
just as its members support and give to the M.R.S. through their
participation in its goals and objectives. The M.R.S. commits to the
following as a means of giving back to the larger community:
a) As part of its monthly meeting the M.R.S. will hold a continuous food
drive through the acceptance of non-perishable food and cash donations.
The members will determine which food bank will be the recipient of these
donations and the frequency of distribution.
b) As part of its Christmas/Winter Solstice Celebration, the M.R.S. as
represented by its Board, shall select disadvantaged families as
recipients of gifts of food, clothing and personal items. This activity is
not meant to be used as a means to advertise the M.R.S.
c) The M.R.S. as an organization will encourage its members to privately
engage in similar activity by announcing available opportunities at its
November meeting.
d)
The M.R.S. as an organization will take the necessary steps to establish a
meditation/prayer group. The group will respond to the health needs, of
whatever type, of its members and the community at large by request or
self-initiation and will strive to meet as need indicates.
e) The M.R.S. as an
organization will take the steps necessary to offer to its members, and
the community at large, charitable activities by its members.
